Issue

Slate plugins are installed to ' C: Program Files Vstplugins ' by default. You will need to add this path to Ableton or install Slate plugins to your custom VST path. Click the 'Options' drop-down menu and select Preferences. Under File Folder, make sure 'Use VST Plug-In Custom Folder' is on. First, download the plugin to your computer and install it. Once the plugin is installed, open Ableton Live. Go to the “Live” tab at the top left, and click “Preferences”. Click on the Plug-In section and make sure to activate “Use Audio Units”, “Use VST2 Plug-In System Folders” and “Use VST2 Plug-In Custom Folder”.

You can’t find the Equator VST or AU plugin inside a digital audio workstation (DAW).

Solution

After downloading Equator from My ROLI and then installing it, the Equator plugin is saved in the following locations:

Mac

  • VST Plug-in: Mac HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/
  • AU Plug-in: Mac HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/

Windows

  • VST Plug-in (32-bit): C:Program FilesCommon Files(x86)SteinbergVST2
  • VST Plug-in (64-bit): C:Program FilesCommon FilesSteinbergVST2

Ensuring your DAW is using the correct plug-in location

Some DAWs have different default locations to scan for plugins. If you have installed a plugin (like Equator) and can’t seem to access it from your DAW, check the DAW’s settings to ensure that it is looking in the right folder. In some DAWs you can set additional folders to scan automatically.

Live

For example, in Ableton Live:

  • Go to Preferences > File Folder.
  • Select the button Use VST Plug-In Custom Folders
  • Click Browse by VST Plug-In Customer Folder
  • In the window that opens, navigate to the folder where your VST plugin is located:
    • C:Program FilesCommon FilesSteinbergVST2Equator for RISE x64.dll
  • Press Rescan to make Ableton find the VSTs in that folder and make them available in your project.

How To Install Vst Ableton

Ableton comes with an impressive, diverse and extremely usable set of instruments, effects and samples. However, at some point you will almost certainly want to install 3rd party plug ins to get that sound you need.

Luckily for you, the process of adding 3rd party plug-ins on a Mac is extremely straight forward. It is literally a case of copying the plug in files into the Mac plug in directory. Once this is done Ableton will automatically find your plug-ins ready to use.

Where is the Ableton Plug ins folder?

The truth is there isn’t one specifically for Ableton, it’s a shared plug ins folder in you Mac Library. By default the folders used to contain plug-ins, and where you need to copy them to, are:

(for AU) Library > Audio > Plug ins > Component
(for VST) Library > Audio -> Plug ins > VST

In Ableton there is also the ability to set a custom location for your plug ins folder. This is handy if you have multiple DAWs installed on the same Mac, or if you just want to use a different hard disc, perhaps a solid state to run them from.
